 H&M

H&M is FINALLY coming to Nashville

I can’t really express my extreme jubilation at this occurrence.  There is no date yet but they will be building a custom space in Opry Mills!!!

I am production stage managing Cabaret for Tennessee Repertory Theatre

Cabaret

If you are in the Nashville area you should come and see it and support your girl.  It runs February 16-March 9 with previews on Feb 14 & 15.  It will be extended through March 16 and may be extended further.  I would be a great Valentine’s Date Night Event and its cost friendly.

I have also started teaching part-time at my undergrad MTSU

I am not longer blonde and am officially a red head! At first I have to admit I wasn’t feeling it, but I do love it now.  I used a Ion’s Demi Permanent in Dark Copper Blonde. Demi permanents work best when coloring lightened hair.  I used two boxes and a 10 developer.  Never use more than a 10 developer with a demi permanent.

This is a twistout that I installed on Saturday Night.  I blew out my hair last week and wanted to keep as much length as possible so I only used a small amount of Hydratherma Natural Daily Growth Lotion on each twisted section. I untwisted and fluffed this morning.

I am honestly falling in love with Nashville all over again.  African St. Festival is this weekend along with Wine on the River which is sold out.

Today’s OOTD Blue Jean Queen…you can find the details o the Youtube

But I am most psyched about the fact that Carrie Mae Weems newest exhibit, Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video, is also going up at The Frist Center and opens on the 21st and I can tell you how geeked I am. The Scene also has a dope article of the topic.

There’s also an interesting article at the Huffington Post with the Curator Kathryn E. Delmez of the Exhibit who works at The Frist Center. She speaks about Weems and” how From a young age, [she has] been interested in learning more about people who are different from [her] and various “hidden histories,” as Weems calls the stories not written into mainstream accounts.”

I will leave you with this really dope list of upcoming events in Nashville that I also found over at the Nashville Scene

Sept. 20:  Nfocus Al Fresco Enjoy appetizers and four courses — including family-style entrees — created by Chef Bart Pickens of Loveless Event Catering. There will also be wine, beer and cocktail pairings all served outside on the grounds of the plantation, with proceeds benefiting Mercy Children’s Clinic. 6 p.m. at Carnton Plantation

Sept. 20-22: Nashville Whiskey Festival This three-day festival starts with a VIP Tasting and Symposium and ends with the main event, an afternoon tasting as well as seminars conducted by spirit experts. A portion of ticket sales will benefit Nashville Clean Water Project. War Memorial Auditorium

Sept. 21-22: Southern Ground Music and Food Festival Oorganized by musical foodies The Zac Brown Band, Southern Ground will feature music from a variety of top country, alt-country, rock and pop acts alongside food from the band’s own cook as well as some of Nashville’s food trucks, restaurants and caterers. The Lawn at Riverfront Park

Sept. 22: The Great Food Truck Festival

The Lenox Village neighborhood is hosting a festival of food trucks in southeast Davidson County that will also include family-friendly live entertainment. A portion of the trucks’ proceeds will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. 5 p.m. at Lenox Village Square

Sept. 30: East Nashville Cocktail Crawl Sample signature cocktails at Watanabe World Cuisine, No. 308, Rumors East, Pomodoro East and enjoy access to the Tasting Room, which will focus on 1-ounce tastings of boutique spirits and liquors. VIP crawlers will also have access to a food and cocktail pairing event at The Holland House Bar & Refuge.

Oct. 9: Charlie Daniels Scholarships for Heroes Dinner

Dine on The Palm’s surf-and-turf while being entertained by Charlie himself. The dinner raises funds benefiting Sentinels of Freedom, an organization that helps injured veterans. 6:30 p.m. at The Palm

Oct. 13: Jog ‘n’ Hog Nashville’s iconic candy, Goo Goo Clusters, celebrates its 100th birthday this year with a number of events throughout the fall. As part of the celebration, the candy is hosting Jog ‘n’ Hog, in which participants jog two miles, eat Goo Goo Clusters and then jog another two miles. The event coincides with the 100th birthday of Shelby Park as well. 8:30 a.m. at Shelby Park

Oct. 13: Oktoberfest

Historic Germantown — home to some of the oldest residences in the city — invites the rest of Nashville to celebrate their German heritage at this free event that takes place throughout the neighborhood. The festival features a beer garden, authentic German food and entertainment, as well as a special play area just for the kids. 9 a.m. at Seventh Avenue and Monroe Street

Oct. 14: Battle of the Food Trucks

The food trucks step back in the ring to raise money for The Tomorrow Fund. Sample from the trucks and vote for your favorites. 3 p.m. at Greer Stadium

Oct. 14: Nashville Chili Festival

This all-ages event includes music, a chili pepper eating contest, activities for the kids and, of course, chili tastings and beer. Proceeds benefit Community Shares. Noon at Yazoo Brewing Co.

Oct. 19: Franklin Wine Festival The festival includes a number of vintner dinners and seminars, but the big event is the Grand Tasting with more than 300 wines to sample and food from more than 30 restaurants and confectioners. 7 p.m. at The Factory at Franklin

Nov. 2: Wine Down Main Street

Franklin will close off traffic as Main Street merchants host special wine, beer and food tastings. Ticket prices include entertainment and all tastings. Proceeds benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee, Franklin and Fairview Clubhouses. 7 p.m. on Main Street in Downtown Franklin

Tuesday’s OOTD and I’m still rockin my No Makeup Face just some mascara and gloss.  Another reason I’ll be happy to get back to Tennessee,  I had issues with my skin when I lived on the West Coast, and issues on the East Coast though not as many, and as much as I complain about the HumidSouth my hair and skin act best under those circumstances.

Click after the jump for more details on today’s ‘Fit and also a Natural Hair Quick Tip for easy texture.  I’m planning on getting back into the habit of doing more posts on natural hair, these posts just require more time and effort and will be easier for me to do once I am back home!

I hope that everyone had a great Father’s Day weekend! I wasn’t able to be home with my family but of course I still felt the love. Sent a ComicBook Card off to my dad because well he the reason why Im such and AfroGeek anyway.  His comic book collection as a kid was borderline obsessive and well he was really into the Black Comic Heroes which was even more exciting to me, and well it still excites me today. I’m sad when I ask little Black kids about Black Comic Book characters and all I get is Storm from X-Men.

I am less than 10 days away from heading back to Tennessee and well I can’t say that I’ve packed much of anything.  I’ve put most of the items up in my apartment for sale, I’ve sold a few pieces but I need to sell much more!

I am so happy to be headed home and yet the fancy mix of emotions I am experiencing is getting on my nerves.

So this is just a round-up of my the weekends OOTD’s and whatever other little bits and piece of me I can find to throw in.

The past week of my life has pretty much been a whirlwind of activity and I couldn’t have done it without the folks in the pic to the left. I have to admit that I have some awesome friends who are there for me when I need them most.  SunFest 2012 would have been a no go if it wasnt for Spoon, Coco, and Madame CJ(not pictured)

So this post will have a few of my OOTD’s for the past week and also some goodies that were gifted to me by some of my fabulous vendors!

Check out more after the jump!

Curry(OOTD)Curls

June 7, 2012

3 days until SunFest and my Little(Play) Brother and Mentee from grad school is coming in from “The Boot” to help me with the festival.  I went from having him live right around the corner when I was in Cali to him now being on the Gulf Coast and me on the East.  So its a mini reunion and work gig all smashed into one.

The heat is back after a few chilly days which means no more last minute OOTD changes.  Its always a goal of mine to step  up my pants game simply because I don’t like pants.  I love alot of the new trousers and peg leg style pants that Ive been seeing. The work well for us less hippy Queens. Today’s OOTD is hopefully a step in that direction, let me know your thoughts? And don’t forget to Love your Body today, flaws, fineness, and all. More details after the jump!

The filmmaker Zina Saro-Wiwa presents an Op-Doc on black women’s decision to embrace their naturally kinky hair, rather than use chemical straighteners. For whatever reason my embed code isn’t working so you can view the Video Transition Here

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Transition – Video Library – The New York Times, posted with vodpod

This film speaks so much to how I feel about natural hair and why Im pretty passionate in my arguments with women of color who prefer to rock their straight hair more often than not.

I love versatility more than anyone.  If you know me you know I’ve rocked many different over the years. I’ve done my own weave, wigs, braids, straightening, dying, and rocked my natural hair in a myriad of styles. I came to be concerned when I realized that I was defaulting to straight hair more often than not.  Now granted Ive been natural for all of my life minus two years in undergrad, but it still didnt sit well with me.  Why was I so bothered when I rocked my natural hair?  Why was I having many panic attacks if my edges didnt lay straight and flat, or I couldnt get every single one of my curls completely defined? Then I realized that it wasn’t about ease it was about fear.

In this video Saro Wiwa talks about how so many Women of color don’t see natural hair as a political movement and this troubles me.  I have always thought of it as a political movement, as Black Power, as a way for Black Folk to reclaim what we seem to have lost. Our sense of community, identity, our sense of self love, a belief in Black Love, and Black Family, our belief in us plain and simple.  Im discouraged when I seam the #team hashtags anywhere because it seems for some that this will become yet another way to divide us.

I can admit that I don’t understand the ease, practical excuses when I have only ever seen your hair it its straight state. It still speaks to the fact (and we know that actions speak louder than words right?) that when you look in the mirror you can’t deal with or see the beauty in the natural you, so you have to alter in order to feel more comfortable in your skin. Protective Styling doesn’t mean  you true hair always has to be hidden.

No you don’t have to rock a fro 365 to know self, but when youve never known or taken the time to embrace your roots, learn them, love them, cherish tme. You’re only intersted in the easy route, then to me that speaks to lack of love for self and a misunderstanding of the DOPENESS that is your own culture.

I am intersted in truly hearing your thoughts on this and not just from women!

The NeoAfro

Just a quick OOTD post.  Its cloudy and cooler today in DMV and I’m not complaining.  I really love the neon trend and well gingham is probably one of my favorite fabrics.

The Dress is Spring 2010 from H&M.  It is actually a size 8 but because everything is made oversized these days it fits.

The necklace is F21 I’ve seen it in so many other colors it other OOTD posts, but Neon Yellow was all I saw when I purchased mine.  This year I have really stepped up my necklace swag and how I can use them to accentuate my ensembles.

The Bracelet is H&M Spring 2012

and the RainBoots these have to be one of my all time fav staples. They are from the Gap and they have to be at least 5 years old if not more.  I purchased these way before rainboots because trendy and if you didn’t know I tend to precede trends and not follow them.

The Straw Clutch is thrifted and Ive had it for at least 5 or 6 years as well and its actually been broken and Ive been too lazy to stich it back together which I finally found the time to do this week!

See the full ‘Fit after the Jump and be sure to let me know how you loved your body today?
